FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Q: When will the National Children’s Science Centre open?
A: The opening of the National Children’s Science Centre depends on securing Government support. Once confirmed, we will share updates on timelines and details for the grand opening.

Q: Where will the centre be located?
A: The NCSC is located at Earlsfort Terrace, in the heart of Dublin. Easily accessible by public transportation and ample parking will be available.

Q: What will the centre offer?
A: The NCSC will feature a wide range of exhibits on topics such as space exploration, environmental science, human biology and technology. Our 122-seat planetarium will allow visitors to embark on virtual journeys through the cosmos, experiencing space flight and visiting new worlds. We will also explore the intricacies of the Earth's structure, the building blocks of life, DNA and much, much more.

Q: Will it be suitable for all ages?
A: Yes, while designed for children and young people, the NCSC will offer experiences for all ages, with interactive zones for young children and more advanced exhibits for older visitors.

Q: How will it support schools?
A: The NCSC will work closely with schools, integrating with the STEM curriculum through workshops, guided tours, teacher resources and outreach programmes. A dedicated education lab will allow students to conduct hands-on experiments.

Q: Will the centre prioritise accessibility and inclusivity?
A: The NCSC will be fully wheelchair accessible. We will also offer wheelchair rentals to visitors who need them and we will have tactile maps for blind and visually impaired visitors. We will follow the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to ensure inclusivity for all abilities.

Q: How does the NCSC align with sustainability goals?
A: Sustainability will be a core theme, with exhibits highlighting environmental challenges and solutions. We align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, educating young people on how they can help protect the planet.

Q: What impact will the NCSC have on Ireland?
A: Ireland is the only OECD country without a national children’s science centre. The NCSC will inspire scientific curiosity, strengthen STEM education and showcase Ireland’s scientific heritage, helping to develop the next generation of innovators.

Q: How will the NCSC be funded?
A: In addition to the Office of Public Works (OPW) partnership for building refurbishment, the NCSC will secure funding for exhibits, the planetarium and operating costs through philanthropy, grants and fundraising events.

Q: What impact will the NCSC have on Children in Ireland?
A: We want the NCSC to be a key part of education in Ireland. We aim to work closely with schools across the country to integrate our resources into the national curriculum. By the time we open, we hope to have these partnerships established to enhance what children are learning in school and make the NCSC a regular destination for school trips. Our goal is to educate and entertain and we look forward to seeing the positive changes this will bring for children across Ireland.

Q: How will the NCSC support the science curriculum for primary and secondary education?
A: The NCSC will serve as a valuable extension to the primary and secondary school STEM curricula by providing interactive and practical experiences that enhance classroom learning. It will aim to complement the curriculum by offering hands-on opportunities to explore STEM concepts and carry out scientific research in a state-of-the art science laboratory.

Not only will we support the national curriculum, but we can also offer feedback in developing the curriculum through learning and research at the NCSC.

Q: Will the NCSC be just Dublin based?
A: No. While the NCSC will be located in Dublin city centre, it will not be limited to this location. We plan to engage a broader audience through Exhibit 15, a permanent traveling outreach exhibit that will visit schools all over Ireland. Additionally, we will have interactive portals that will be accessible to children worldwide, expanding our educational reach far beyond the physical museum. Our outlook is global—we've had board members from similar centres in the United States and we will maintain ongoing collaborations with international centres.

Q: Can I get involved?
A: Yes! Whether you’re an educator, scientist, corporate partner or supporter, we welcome collaboration to help bring the NCSC to life. To get involved or donate, contact us at info@nationalchildrenssciencecentre.ie.
